# How expensive is Portugal? Rent, groceries & lifestyle

Living in Portugal costs one person between €800 and €1,150 a month in 2026, rent included. Where you land in that range comes down to two things: which city you pick, and whether you share a flat. Lisbon sits at the top of it, Porto at the bottom. Below you find what a normal month actually looks like, from rent to groceries to a Friday night out.

Quick Answer One person spends around €800 to €1,150 per month in Portugal (rent included) Sharing a flat is what keeps the total in that range Lisbon is the most expensive city, Porto is clearly cheaper , where the gap is almost entirely rent Everything outside rent costs less than in the Netherlands or Germany When you move through Yobbers , you may spend less on rent because many employers offer accommodation at a reduced rate What is the average cost of living in Portugal per month? The average cost of living in Portugal is €800 to €1,150 per month for one person. That covers rent, groceries, utilities, a transport pass and a social life. It assumes you share a flat , cook most weekdays and use public transport instead of taxis. For reference: the Portuguese minimum wage is €920 gross per month in 2026, which comes to roughly €819 net. Salaries here are paid over 14 instalments , not 12, so a holiday allowance in summer and a Christmas allowance in December arrive on top of that. What a normal month costs Rent: €400 - €600 Groceries: €200 - €250 Utilities: €40 - €60 Transport Pass: €30 - €40 Social life: €120 - €180 Total: €790 - €1,130 What does a room cost in Lisbon? Debating working in Portugal through Yobbers? A big advantage is that employers we work with arrange accommodation, a flight ticket and airport transfer. When accommodation is included, you usually rent a room at a reduced rate through your employer. The monthly rent is deducted from your salary. If you choose a remote job, you usually arrange and pay for your own accommodation. For some jobs, you may be able to use employer-provided accommodation if you decide to live in Lisbon. If you choose a remote job or prefer to find your own accommodation, it helps to know what renting in Lisbon costs. A room in a shared flat in Lisbon costs €400 to €600 per month. Central and trendy areas like Bairro Alto and Graça sit at the top of that range. Neighbourhoods such as Arroios, Alameda, Benfica and Campolide give you more space for the same money. Living outside the centre works well here, because the monthly transportation pass covers the whole metropolitan area. A room in Amadora or Odivelas with a metro station nearby often costs €100 less than the same room three stops closer in. I pay €450 for my room in Arroios and it is fifteen minutes on the metro to work. A friend of mine pays €600 in Chiado for a smaller room. What does a room cost in Porto? If you arrange your own accommodation, a room in a shared flat in Porto costs €300 to €450 per month, so roughly €100 to €150 less than in Lisbon . Cedofeita is a popular neighbourhood, Boavista is more quiet and has a better value, though Campanhã is cheaper if you do not mind being further out. If your employer arranges accommodation, you usually rent a room at a reduced rate instead. The monthly rate is deducted from your salary. What do groceries cost in Portugal? Groceries cost €200 to €250 per month for one person, or around €50 to €60 a week. A normal weekly shop with vegetables, fruit, rice, pasta, chicken, eggs and yoghurt lands close to €50. Compared with the Netherlands or Germany, that is noticeably cheaper . The same shop in Rotterdam or Cologne often costs €70 to €80. Fresh local produce is where the difference sits: fish, fruit and vegetables from a market like Bolhão in Porto cost less than the supermarket version, while imported brands cost about the same as at home. What do transport and utilities cost in Portugal? A monthly transport pass costs €40 in both Lisbon and Porto. In Lisbon the Navegante Metropolitano pass covers metro, buses, trams, ferries and the suburban trains to Sintra and Cascais across all 18 municipalities. In Porto the Andante works the same way. If you stay inside one municipality, the €30 version is enough. A single metro ride is around €1.90. Utilities for a shared flat come to €80 to €130 per month in total, so €40 to €60 each with three people. Summer air conditioning and winter heating are what move that number, and both cities have a real winter dip in temperature even when the sun is out. What does going out cost in Portugal? Going out is where Portugal stays genuinely cheap. An espresso at the counter costs €0.80 to €1.20, a pastel de nata around €1.50, and the prato do dia at lunch is €8 to €12 including a drink. Dinner out with a glass of wine sits between €15 and €20 , and a francesinha in Porto lands around €12. A full Friday evening, dinner plus drinks plus a shared taxi home, usually stays under €30. And plenty of what people do at the weekend costs nothing at all: the beach at Costa da Caparica, the sunset from a miradouro, the walk along the Douro. ☀️ Is a Portuguese salary enough to cover this? Yes, for a shared flat and a normal social life. On €819 net at minimum wage the budget is tight but workable; most international customer service and content roles pay above the minimum, which gives you room. Housing changes the maths more than people expect. With jobs in Portugal through Yobbers the employer arranges your accommodation, so you do not have to find a room from another country, pay a deposit before you arrive or compete with the local rental market at all. For the other side of the sum, the guide to salaries and living costs in Portugal starts from the pay slip instead of the budget. So can you live comfortably in Portugal? Yes, you can live comfortably in Portugal on a moderate salary, as long as you share a flat. Between €800 and €1,150 a month you get a room in a decent neighbourhood, a full social life and weekends that do not need planning around money. When you move through Yobbers , you may have more money left to spend because employer-provided accommodation often comes at a reduced rate. Saving a lot is harder, especially in Lisbon, where rent has risen faster than wages for years. If that is your main goal, working in Porto gets you further than working in Lisbon , and how expensive Greece is sits in a similar range as Lisbon if you are still comparing destinations.
