Typical Swedish

Do you like coffee? Then Sweden is the place to be. Because in Sweden, they drink a lot of coffee. And that brings us straight to the next thing. If you go to work in Sweden, it is quite normal – when you have a break – to have a cup of coffee with a sweet pastry. This is also known as Fika. Time to catch up with your new colleagues.

That you think of winter, cold, and dark when you hear about Sweden is somewhat justified. In winter, the days are relatively short, and it is very cold. Yet, it can also be nice weather in Sweden. For instance, the Gulf Stream provides a mild climate. Depending on where you sit while working in Sweden, temperatures can vary enormously. Are you near Götaland or Malmö? Then the average temperature is between 15 and 25 degrees. If you are further north, near Norrland, the days are shorter, colder and winter lasts a little longer. So even in Sweden it can reach 30 degrees!

In Sweden, you pay with the Swedish Krona. This will be some math calculations at the checkout from time to time!

Island in a Swedish lake

In Sweden, nobody is averse to celebrating, or in other words, eating. On 4 October, for instance, they celebrate 'Kanelbullens day', or cinnamon roll day. The cinnamon roll is a Swedish delicacy available all over the country. If you are going to live and work in Sweden, then you are guaranteed to taste this delicacy. Enough food talk. Midsommar. This festival is celebrated from 19 to 25 June. Together with Christmas, it is one of the most important festivals in Sweden. When Midsommar begins, Swedes stop working and often move to the countryside, private residences or other accommodation outside the city to celebrate with friends and family here. And what is really typically Swedish is Glögg. This spiced, sugared and stewed red wine is something you have to taste when you go to work in Sweden. Many times this drink is drunk around Christmas in a small mug with a handle!

The Must-See's in Sweden

Do you always go wild as soon as you hear Dancing Queen thumping through the speakers, and have you seen the film Mamma Mia often enough? Then the ABBA museum in Stockholm is definitely fun to visit! Here you can admire the band members' outfits, take a picture with their holograms and dance along in a music video. Stockholm is also home to the Vasa Museum, which houses a sunken warship. This boat carries a huge amount of history and at the museum they will tell you all about it!

The Swedish island of Gamla Stan is also well worth a visit. Here you can visit the old Royal Palace, the statue of St George and the Dragon and the Great Church. The royal family now lives in a new palace: the Drottningholm Palace. The interior, the gardens, it's beautiful!

Pippi Longstocking fans take note: the entire TV series was shot on the island of Gotland. The atmosphere in the historic town is magical, and a guide will be happy to tell you all about its history. Also very cool: the Ice Hotel. At the bar, you can drink hot chocolate from a glass made of ice. You can sleep there for a night, but may also visit the hotel during the day to see the sculptures. Brrrr!
