Typical Dutch

The Netherlands is known for its beautiful, flat landscape and the many opportunities for cycling, boating or hiking. You will find it all whether you prefer to be in the city or in nature. The Dutch do not know bad weather; people ride their bikes in all weather. Even when it rains, you can find the Dutch outside on the terraces and cafés enjoying life. If you work in the Netherlands, you will quickly get to know the term “borrel”. Often held after work or with friends, it means meeting for a beer or wine after work while enjoying typical Dutch snacks.

If you work in the Netherlands, you should also take a trip to the beautiful islands of Texel, Vlieland Terschelling, Ameland or Schiermonnikoog during weekends. These are great places to relax and enjoy nature; in summer, you can swim in the sea.

Many cities in the Netherlands are also worth a visit. Amsterdam, the most famous and capital city in the Netherlands, invites you to stroll along the canals. Fans of the royal family will be warmly welcomed in The Hague. You can not only marvel at the Noordeinde Palace and the Binnenhof Parliament building but also admire the royal couple on certain days.

The most famous holiday of the Dutch is Kingsday, which takes place every year on 27 April. On this day, the Dutch celebrate the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. You have that day off if you live and work in the Netherlands. You should join the whole country, dress in the national colour orange, and join in the celebrations. Other holidays include Liberation Day, which takes place every year on 5 May and is celebrated with many events.
