Teaching Volunteer Project

Ghana is a country of dramatic change and optimism, which is reflected in the schools in which we work. Though they are often over-crowded, understaffed and under-funded, a real enthusiasm and a hope for the future seem to permeate through the students. It is going to be hard to maintain this as more and more skilled teachers continue to leave for EUROPE and AMERICA in search of lucrative teaching contract, because of this we welcome any assistance from volunteers to teach basic causes like English, French, Computer, Mathematics or Science from pre-schools, primary, junior high or senior high schools. You don’t need qualification to be part of our teaching project just basic knowledge of the subjects, you can volunteer for a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of 12months. Your contribution will go a long way to make a difference in a Child's life. You don’t even need to speak the local language where you are volunteering. The program is open to all volunteers whether you are on a gap year, at university or wanting a career break. All we require is a good standard of spoken English. You will find a warm welcome awaits you from our students. Assisting teachers in schools with limited resources provides an engaging environment for educating children and teenagers. Your ideas, your energy, and your presence are exciting for students and invigorating for the teachers and parents. The students are full of curiosity about the world around them and they welcome your perspective, you will also serve or be seen as a positive role models to students, you will assist to teach basic causes like English, Computer, Mathematics or Science from pre-schools, primary, junior high or senior high school. You may also be involved in creative projects and non-classroom based activities, which help create a stimulating learning environment. You can choose to teach pre-schools (age 1 to 6-years), primary(age 7 to 11), junior high or senior high school. All our community schools are very understaffed this is a common phenomenon in both rural and urban areas of Ghana, hence the need to recruit and place volunteers in communities where there are simply insufficient teachers to cater for the number of children. You will be effectively placed in rural and urban communities where you will teach solo and assist the few teachers available to teach basic causes like English, Mathematics, Science, French, Dutch, creative art, drama, music, and Computer from per-schools(1-year to 6-year), primary(7-year to 12-years), junior high or senior high schools. Your responsibilities will include but not limited to the following below; >> Prepare lesson notes >> Organize learning materials >> Develop a teaching method >> Teach classes through lecturing, discussions and demonstrations >> Discuss output and methods with fellow teachers and supervisor >> Access the performance of the students through work assignments, etc >> Organize recreational games with students Note: If you think you cant teach in a classroom with many children you can have one -on -one teaching lessons with one of the children who is lacking behind the other children. You will receive assistance from us regarding the lesson plans and teaching curriculum. There will be a Teaching Guide book to assist you in your daily work with the children. You can bring along teaching materials and new teaching ideas, picture books, instruments, flash cards, art supplies, and songs. Classes are generally in session five days a week from 8am to 1:30pm. You have the rest of the day to yourselves; you can explore the city with the other volunteers. The volunteer house you will be staying with other volunteers from Europe, America and Australia is very close to the beach, art craft center and the local market so there is always a lot to do. You can choose to volunteer in the capital city Accra or in the Ghanaian country side. Volunteers are awarded certificates after successfully completing the project placement. Our projects run throughout the year so you can volunteer with us any time that is suitable for you. Our minimum volunteering period is two weeks and the maximum of one year. You need to send us your application form at least three weeks before your intended trip to Ghana to volunteer with us. This will give us enough time to send you all the necessary document and information you will need for your visa. You can choose to stay either with a host family or in a volunteer house together with other volunteers from all over the world. Our projects are located in several regions in Ghana, West Africa. Ghana is an exciting and popular country to spend time in. The country was once a British colony know as the 'Gold Coast' but became independent in 1957. However, English is still the official language. Ghana is renowned for the friendliness and warmth of its people and provides you with a wonderful introduction to Africa. It is politically-stable, safe, affordable, and rewarding to visit. We have volunteer coordinators who will be responsible for you and the other volunteers, your well-being while volunteering with us is our priority. We make sure your trip is safe and our in-country coordinators will provide whatever support you may need at any step along the way. We have a very good support system in Ghana that will give you orientation and all the in country support you will need. Our projects are not all about work, as a volunteer you get the weekend off to go on trips, relax and explore Ghana. The country has so much to offer volunteers with its rich culture, festivals, food, art & craft centers, castles & forts, long sandy beaches, national parks, waterfalls, rain forest, beach resorts and so on. Every weekend we organize trips for our volunteers to travel throughout Ghana to experience the Ghanaian cultural and explore. Our organization gives you an excellent opportunity to combine adventurous travel with a worthwhile job as a volunteer. You will improve your transferable skills such as team-work, presentation and communication.
