Venturing out of your comfort zone with your friend

Amathea and Emma decided to make the leap together and venture out of their comfort zones to embrace an adventure abroad working in Greece.

What’s better than moving abroad for an unforgettable adventure? Obviously, taking your friend with you and making memories you can still talk about in the retirement home! 👵🏼👴🏽 Following a happy coincidence, that’s exactly what Emma and Amathea decided to do. Read their story here!

Amathea’s master plan was to move to a new city within her home country of Norway to start her university studies with her boyfriend. 🤓 Unfortunately, as we all know, things don’t always go according to plan. When her and her boyfriend decided to end their relationship she started to come up with a plan B as studying alone in a new city didn’t sound so exciting anymore. That’s when she found Yobbers on Instagram and was immediately drawn to the idea of a gap year working abroad; growing professionally while making memories! 🌎

Going on adventure together

Even though the idea of moving abroad was instantly attractive, it was also something that Amathea didn’t want to do alone. This is why she decided to reach out to her good friend Emma, telling her all about Yobbers and what a great adventure this would be to experience together. Coincidentally, Yobbers wasn’t new to Emma, rather she already had an active application with us. Emma was able to help Amathea get started through our referral program and earned €300 because of this!

We were really happy with the clear, open and fast communication we had with the Yobber’s recruiters.

Both Amathea and Emma were pleasantly surprised that the application process was smooth and fast paced. Already two weeks after applying they had received their job offers to work in Athens! Their future employer organised and paid for their flights, and took into account that they’d want to travel together, which was nice not to worry about. Upon arrival, they were greeted by a friendly driver holding a sign with their names on it, happily some other future employees of the same company were on the same car ride and Amathea and Emma could already meet some of their new colleagues! The car ride took them to a hotel to enjoy the first couple of weeks of their new life in Greece. 🌞

Finding an accommodation in Athens

The apartment hunt was something that both Amathea and Emma were a little scared of before arriving, as they weren’t able to reach out to any real estate agents while being outside of Greece. Thankfully this process also turned out to be easier than expected! They got help from a very friendly and kind, local real estate agent who managed to find them a new home with no time at all! If you need help finding your new home in Athens, check out our tips in this blog, or contact our recruiters; they’re experts in living abroad!

Come prepared - do some research about your new home country/city and be ready for the hiring process to be faster than expected.

Despite only being in Greece for a few weeks, they both already have their favourite places in Athens. For Amathea it’s the Bolivar Beach Bar, with a beautiful beach (who would’ve thought) and cosy sunbeds to lounge on. There is an entrance fee for this bar of 6e which makes it feel safer than other locations they have visited. 🏖🐚

Emma’s favourite place located close to their home in Piraeus is the Bounty all day bar, which has excellent service and delicious food! The cost of a meal in restaurants is also cheaper than in Norway, which makes it possible to eat out more often and enjoy the local cuisine!

The most memorable experience so far has been running into other employees of the same company by chance. One day the girls were on a walk close to their home and bumped into two other girls also from Norway, and with a quick conversation they found out they are all working for the same company. Much to everyone’s frustration they forgot to exchange contact information and thought they wouldn’t see each other again, until 2 days later they ran into each other in the exact same spot and have now been spending time together daily. What are the odds of that!

When asked what is some advice the girls would give to others who also want to move abroad this is what they said:

Don’t think about it too much! Things will always work out regardless of what happens and one thing’s for sure: you will have to venture out of your comfort zone every once in a while. - Emma

Don’t be afraid to talk to people, locals or expats alike. This is the best way to get to know others! - Amathea
