Faces behind Yobbers: recruiter Amelie on moving abroad
Every day, candidates contact Yobbers with the same mix of excitement and nerves: "I want to do this, but I'm not sure I'm ready." Behind every one of those conversations is a real person who listens and guides, someone who has often stood exactly where that candidate is standing now. One of our recruiters at Yobbers is Amelie. We sat down with her to talk about what that's really like, the nerves, the growth, and the messages that make it all worth it.

Meet recruiter Amelie
I'm Amelie, and I'm a recruiter at Yobbers. 📞 I help German and Dutch-speaking candidates find jobs abroad, mainly in Portugal and Greece. From the very first conversation until they receive a job offer, I'm there to guide them through the whole process, answer their questions, and hopefully make their move abroad as smooth as possible.
One of my favourite parts of the job is seeing someone go from "I'm not sure if I should do this" to "My flight is already booked!
From Germany to abroad: how it all started
I've always loved travelling and experiencing new cultures. During my studies, I had the opportunity to do a semester abroad in Mexico and an internship in Madrid, and that completely changed my perspective. I realised how much you grow when you step outside your comfort zone. After graduating, I knew I didn't want to stay in Germany, so moving abroad felt like the right next step. 🛫
The reality of starting over somewhere new
It's honestly been one of the best decisions I've ever made. Of course, there were challenges at first, like finding my way around a new country and building a new social circle. But those challenges helped me become much more independent and confident. I've met amazing people from all over the world, improved my language skills, and gained experiences I would never have had if I'd stayed home.
Why her own experience makes all the difference
Because I've been through the same process myself, I understand what candidates are feeling. I know how exciting, but also how scary it can be to move abroad. Whether it's questions about finding accommodation, packing, dealing with homesickness, or simply wondering if you've made the right decision, I've experienced many of those things myself. That allows me to give honest advice and reassure candidates that feeling nervous is completely normal.🙏🏻
Her favourite candidate story
It's hard to choose just one story because every candidate has a different journey. But my favourite moments are when someone who was initially full of doubts messages me a few weeks after moving abroad saying: "I almost didn't do it, but now I'm so happy I did." Those messages always make my day.
What most people get wrong about working abroad
A lot of people think they need years of work experience or perfect English to find a job abroad. In reality, many of our vacancies are entry-level positions where companies provide training. Another misconception is that people think they're on their own once they get the job. Actually, both Yobbers and our partners support candidates throughout the process, so they don't have to figure everything out by themselves.
One piece of advice Amelie always gives
Do your research, but don't let overthinking hold you back. Many candidates spend weeks comparing destinations, jobs, and conditions, trying to find the perfect opportunity. In reality, there is rarely a perfect choice. Instead, focus on finding a position that excites you and matches your goals. Once you've found that, trust yourself and go for it. Most of the growth and unforgettable experiences happen after you've taken that first step.✨
For everyone still doubting
It's completely normal to feel nervous. Almost everyone I speak to has doubts at some point. Moving abroad doesn't have to be a forever decision, even if you only stay for 12 months, you'll learn so much about yourself, meet incredible people, and gain experiences that stay with you for life. In Amelie's words:
It's much better to try something and learn from it than to always wonder "what if.
