From Fear to Excitement: Overcoming Anxiety About Working Abroad

We have all been there. Moving abroad can be an exciting new adventure, but it can also be a scary and intimidating experience. We can guarantee you that this big step into your future is something you will never regret! At Yobbers, we are here to help you navigate your emotions. Whether you have concerns about adjusting to a new culture or leaving your friends and family behind, it's important to address these concerns and deal with them. That's why we've gathered some tips to help you cope with your anxiety about leaving and fully enjoy your new adventure abroad!

Name your fears and put them into perspective

Sometimes your fears can seem very big in your head. Identifying what exactly scares you can help overcome those fears. Are you afraid of being homesick, struggling with a new language, or adapting to a different work culture? We suggest you write down your worries and put them into perspective with all the reasons why you want to move abroad.

Often, just naming your fears can destroy their power over you. Maybe you are scared of feeling alone? Remember that you can always stay connected with your friends and family back home and definitely will make new friends abroad. There is a high chance that there are others in the same position as you. Strangers are just friends you still need to get to know. Just give it some time!

Focus on the positives

Remember why you decided to move abroad in the first place. Whether for career growth, personal development, or the opportunity to experience a new culture, keep these positive motivations at the top of your mind. Moving to a new country offers countless opportunities, such as learning new skills, meeting new people, and broadening your horizons. Imagine yourself thriving in your new job, exploring your beautiful new home, and making lifelong memories. Focusing on the positives can shift your mindset from one of fear to one of excitement!

Stay busy

When you start feeling anxious, staying busy is a great way to deal with those feelings. Before moving, research cool things you can do in your new hometown. Make a list of restaurants you want to try, landmarks or hotspots you want to visit, or fun events you can attend. This will give you something to look forward to and excite you to move! We also recommend you explore your new surroundings to make you feel more comfortable. Knowing where everything you need is located, will help create a new sense of belonging and make you feel less lost.

Join clubs and classes to meet new people

The best way to feel less alone is to share your experience with others! Meeting new people and making new friends can reduce feelings of loneliness and anxiety. We know that making friends in a new country can be difficult, but not impossible! We recommend you join some classes or workshops that align with your interests. Join a book club, attend a fun sports class, or sign up for a gym membership in your area.

Our best tip is to join a language class, where you are likely to meet people in the same situation as you: living abroad, adjusting to a new country. Connecting on similar topics and interests will be a great way to build your social network in your new country, making the transition and living abroad smoother and more enjoyable.

Keep in touch with friends and family

When moving to another country, it is very likely that your family and friends will stay behind. It is important for emotional support to stay in contact with your loved ones regularly. Use video calls, social media, and messaging apps to stay connected. Sharing your experiences with those who care about you can help you feel less isolated and more supported. Also, they can encourage you to go your own way and remind you of all the exciting reasons you choose to go work abroad.

Give yourself time to adjust

Everybody can agree that moving abroad is a big step and will have a great impact on your life. This is why it is extremely important to give yourself time to adjust to your new surroundings. Be patient with yourself. There will be moments where you will feel down and miss home, but this is completely normal! Adjusting to a new country, culture, and job takes time. So take your time, it will be worth it!
