What to do when everything goes wrong? (brandbook blog example)
Let’s be honest. Traveling is great and it looks amazing on TikTok or instagram, but sometimes things go wrong...
Can’t find a place to sleep, your flight gets canceled last-minute or the journey does not match your expectations. All things that might happen, but these moments have a bright side.
We hope this story never happened to anyone, because we rolled all the things that can go wrong into a single story.
One spoiler before we jump in: sometimes the best moments come from these situations and not everything that goes “wrong” is a bad thing. The last part is our favorite 😉.
Canceled flight
It’s early morning at the airport. You’re all ready to go, gave your family a big hug before checking-in and feeling the adventure while you walk through the airport with a big smile on your face. You look up to check the departure time one last time and see… CANCELED 😱.
You hear your exact thoughts out loud next to you: “Well shit!” You’re not the only one that is bummed out by the canceled flight and meet Jane. She is also going to work abroad and you instantly connect. Together you get a new flight a couple of hours later, and in the meantime get to know each other. 2,5 hours later you landed in Valencia and are still talking. After collecting your bags Jane had to run off. But no worries, Jane will return.
Troubles finding an accommodation
Your internet connected and get all the messages you missed while in the air. One is about your accommodation. “Sorry, your apartment won’t be ready for another week” 😳
Lisa, one of our colleagues at Yobbers, had a real story like this when moving to Valencia:
“Sharon and I arranged a really nice apartment in Valencia for our 3 months trip, but just before our flight, we discovered he canceled. However, we stumbled upon a cozy, little room with a really small bed and became the closest friends. We then stayed in two other apartments and the last one was so amazing that we are still talking about it.”
Luckily this hardly ever happens, especially when your accommodation is provided by your employer. Most times you have a temporary accommodation or stay in a hotel for the first week. But when it does happen you can just give Yobbers a call. We will help you find a place to sleep.
Feeling out of place in your new hometown
You’re living and working in your new hometown for a little while and think: “hmm, don’t really feel like I fit in here…” Before your journey you saw yourself sipping sangria, enjoying late diners and surfing on the Spanish beaches 🏖️, but now you're there it's not what you expected. You, Jane and the other friends you made along the way see each other all the time and have great adventures, but you have to get used to the different life more than you thought.
The first thing you should remember is that all beginnings are hard. When you climb on that surfboard for the first time you are going to fall in the water a couple of times. You might feel like bringing the board back because it’s not for you. But imagine this: what if you find your flow and have the best time? Or meet someone that helps you and become great friends that go surfing more often?
But if you really don’t find your fit in the place you are at, it might be time to choose a different place to work. We can always help you with that. Just contact your personal recruiter to make it happen. That brings us to the next point.

Not wanting to go back ;)
Anyone who has ever lived abroad - or still does - has probably thought it at least once: I don't want to go back at all! Having to miss the great lifestyle where you feel more at home, the culture, adventures, and more you love about the country you are in. That’s not even mentioning the friends you made along the way! Daan can tell you all about this.
👨Daan:
"When I decided to move to Spain for a year, I didn't expect to fall head over heels for the country, the culture, and Spanish way of life 🇪🇸💃. Now, I'm saying 'Hasta la vista' to the Netherlands for good, because sometimes the best thing about going abroad is deciding to stay!"
